Explosion Card Gift Box

Hey there!

I'm here today with an explosion card gift box project created for CutCardStock.

Have you created an explosion box card before? I have and they are pretty easy to do. But, I had an Etsy customer ask for a card that would hold a gift. So, I did some calculating and made a prototype or 2 to make sure it was large enough to contain this gift.

This is what I came up with. The outside box measure 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches and the inside box is 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches.

Outer Box Construction

For the outside box I cut 4 pieces of Stardream Metallic AZALEA 105lb 8.5 x 11 Card Stock 5 1/2 x 11 inches and scored each at 5 1/2 inches.

The lid piece measures 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches and is scored at 1 3/8 on all 4 sides.

Adhere the 5 1/2 x 11 inch pieces together. This forms a 5 1/2 inch square base and 4, 5 1/2 inch square sides as seen in the 1st photo below.

For the lid you will want to cut from the outer edge to the middle score line on all 4 corners. This will give you 4 tabs. Fold the edges up, tuck the tabs in and adhere at all 4 corners. I did cut an angle on each tab before adhering.

To decorate the box I cut 10 pieces of patterned paper 5 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches. 5 of these pieces will be used for outside of the box and lid. The other 5 are for the inside panels of this box. I also cut 4 strips of patterned paper 5 1/2 x 1 1/8 inches for the sides of the box lid.

Adhere these pieces. See the photos below.

Inner Box Construction

Using DCS Discount Amaranth Pink 8.5×11 Card Stock, cut 4 pieces of card stock 4 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches. Score these pieces at 4 1/4 along both the short and long side.

Cut from the bottom edge up to the center score line, leaving this piece on the upper half for a tab.

One piece of card stock was cut to 6 1/8 x 6 1/8 inches for the lid. Score at 7/8 inch along all 4 sides. Cut tabs as done for the outside box.

Adhere the 4 large pieces together forming a base for the box. Fold the edges up and attach the tabs to the inside of the sides. This forms a fully enclosed box that measures 4 1/4 inched square.

Cut 5 pieces of patterned paper to 4 x 4 inches for the outside of the box and lid, if desired. 4 pieces cut to 5/8 x 4 inches for sides of lid.

Adhere the patterned paper accordingly.

Putting it all Together

Attach the inner box to the center of the inside of the outer box. I added a ribbon to the bottom of the smaller box before adhering. The ribbon was cut long enough to tie across the box top.

Decorate the inside of the outer box panels and the outer box lid as desired. I used a combination of card stock pieces, patterned paper, punched butterflies, die cut flowers, silk flowers and pearls.

I used Lessebo Colors Premium Bubble Gum Pink 83lb Discount Cardstock, DCS Discount Canvas Textured Pink Tutu Card Stock, Pop Tone PINK LEMONADE 8.5×11 Discount Card Stock.

Thanks for taking look at my project today. I really enjoyed putting it together and hope I’ve provided you with a little inspiration!
